So Microsoft announced Windows Mobile Phone 7 today. Looks great and since I really like the Zune UI, this should be a great experience. I have been holding off getting the Zune HD because I wanted to see if it was going to survive or not and WinPh7 (is that a good acronym?) is taking the Zune UI and placing a phone and whole host of other services with it.
I think it looks great and is a game changing moving from Microsoft, which was needed. Good job MS.
Check out the Official Website for Windows Phone 7.

The Zune HD will be launched globally or at the Financial Times puts it
The Zune-branded service – which includes the most popular films from MGM, Paramount and Universal – will be available in 18 of its largest western markets, including the US, UK, France, Germany and Australia.
This is good news as I have been trying to decide to buy the Zune HD or the IPod touch; as my Zune 30 is now getting old. The Touch is a cool device, but I am anti-social enough that I can’t stand being part of the pack.

I had wanted to just not jump on the bandwagon discussing Microsoft’s layoffs. It is well documented and by people with a deeper knowledge of what goes on inside MSFT.
But I would be remiss to not mention that Cesar (ZuneInsider) of the Zune Team was let go. I liked Cesar enthusiasm for the Zune and his style of writing/marketing. It is a personal style that I assume comes from a big personality. It is hard to convey thoughts and ideas with enthusiasm in text.

For Christmas I got the family an Xbox 360. I agonized over the decision… Would it get the Red Ring of Death… Would it be better than the PS3… Will the Xbox be a good long term investment.
Even though I like Microsoft products in general (Office, Vista, Visual Studio), I am not convinced of there understanding of providing entertainment. I own a Zune, not because of the brand (good MP3 player), but I got it at a huge discount at Woot.com.
Entertainment is not what I associate Microsoft with… Great marketing yes, dominance you betcha! but entertainment?

Well I got my Zune from Woot.com and I am pretty happy with it. I like the bigger display, battery life is not that great and it is not that pretty, but I don’t need a status symbol. I want a MP3 player, Podcasting, Audio Books and video….. Well I don’t have Podcasting yet and Audio Books are coming (sort of) soon.
Overall it is a good device. I have already dropped it and it didn’t skip…. In a few weeks there is a big update for the Zune and hopefully that will make it even better. Its no iPod, but that is ok since I didn’t like the iPod.
