I am in the process of moving over the sites I manage. In preparation of the move, I started looking into any issues of moving from the shared hosting environment and the VPS. The first issue is to modify the “wp-config.php” file to change DB information. From there you just normally FTP your whole site to the new hosting environment. Assuming the new “wp-config.php” file has the correct information you are essentially golden.
Well, I finally got moved over to the new server (VPS at KnownHost.com). I would have been done Sunday, but I toasted the data base and had to rebuild it. I have also moved the site from Wordpress to Wordpress MU. I still have to migrate the other sites over to this server, but I have until February to do so.
My plans had been to migrate to a Windows VPS or host this year, but I know Linux and since I am not learning ASP.NET it was just an extra level of effort I don’t have time for. Beyond that, I have a Windows Home Server and can run sites off it if I want to program on Windows (ASP.NET or PHP).
Since I decided to tweet it on twitter, thought I would make a bit of a longer explanation here.
For the last couple of years I have had an idea in my head of a faith based website to share messages from the the Holy Spirit (e.g. God). I got the idea after I was slapped upside the head by the holy spirit. It happens often because like everybody else I don’t listen much.
I was reading through the ASP.NET blogs to learn a little bit about Sharepoint. My employer uses it for an intranet portal and document management. The idea is good, but I have not been convinced of its "superiority" over anything else as the IT manager cites. From the outset my opinion of Sharepoint was one of "not impressed", but as I have learned a bit more I have come to realize it is an excellent base to build off of. It is my employers implementation that is not that impressive.
