It Saddens Me….

image I hate admitting it, but my server was hacked a few weeks ago (5/24/2010) and the server was used for a phishing scam. They apparently found a week password and exploited it to create a sub domain on a reseller account and ftp in a program to execute. The server was only compromised for 4 hours (4am – 8am) and all phishing content was removed by end of the day. During that 4 hour period an unknown amount of emails were sent out and the malicious program created files, directories and other content all over the server. This was all used to try and get banking information.

Move to VPS Done (aka We’re Home for Thanksgiving)

image Last night I began the move of the last site (figured it would pretty quite). Although, I originally wanted to attach it to the WordPress MU site (what this and the others are on), I could not find good documentation on getting getting all the users on 2SecondsFaster.com into the Wordpres MU database. So I just transferred the site and will look into moving the site into MU later.

VPS vs. Share Account Performance (Apples vs. Oranges)

In the post earlier today, I said 1and1.com has their servers heavily loaded. At the same time, I was curious to what the performance level of my new VPS was when virtually idle. Here are some screen shots of the server load at 1and1 and my VPS as KnownHost.com using PHPSysInfo.

KnownHost.com VPS – with little to no load

1and1.com – Shared Account

Sure this is not apples to apples comparison and the boxes are very different in capacity. The VPS has dedicated ram and processing time. So I am not suggestion, that it is a fair comparison. It is interesting to see that 1and1.com does max out a server, which is reasonably typical in shared account hosting.

The move to the new server is all done (mostly)

image Well, I finally got moved over to the new server (VPS at KnownHost.com). I would have been done Sunday, but I toasted the data base and had to rebuild it. I have also moved the site from WordPress to WordPress MU. I still have to migrate the other sites over to this server, but I have until February to do so.

My plans had been to migrate to a Windows VPS or host this year, but I know Linux and since I am not learning ASP.NET it was just an extra level of effort I don’t have time for. Beyond that, I have a Windows Home Server and can run sites off it if I want to program on Windows (ASP.NET or PHP).

Scale

image My life of recent has had a lot of scale issues… It started with the NFL Excel spread sheet I made, the progressed into an issue at work, and now has popped it’s ugly head up on the sites I run. The later has a lot of immediate needs….

The Excel spread sheet is fine for 5-10 users after that it gets messy to use. Work was an issue of tracking business and in a down economy that is a fun problem to have. Now the sites I run have scaled up near the peak of a shared hosting account.
