Google Nexus One ETF of $350… Plus the Carriers!

image Wow, that “do no evil” motto of Google was apparently not known by the group that decided to charge $350 as their own Early Termination Fee on top of the carries ETF. Have to say I did not expect this from Google! Below is the actual statement from Google’s Nexus One’s Terms of Sale.

Review: Cooler Master Hyper N520

image1First, I am no expert on CPU cooling and this is just a limited review of what I am seeing after a day of use. With that noted…

I bought the Cooler Master Hyper N520 ($39.00) from Fry’s Electronics on the recommendation of the tech guy I was talking too to place in the new computer I was building. I didn’t want to stick with the standard OEM fan from Intel, my experience is they are pretty much garbage when you put the processor under a solid load. I also know that a quad core (have a quad at work) is a pretty hot animal. So I got this behemoth of a cooler… I was actually worried it wouldn’t fit in the case and at nearly 7” tall you have to worry about case size.

2010 Developer Machine

corei5While I was setting up Visual Studio 2008 and SQL 2008 Express on my PC after going to Windows 7 Professional x64, I started thinking about how slow Visual Studio was (just as slow as Vista). I bought the Gateway Dual Core computer in later 2006 or early 2007 and I bought it when I spent most of my time on my work laptop. It has worked well for my use, but Visual Studio is pretty slow (1+ minute to just load). So I decide it was time to upgrade to a new machine.

Windows 7: Welcome to x64 Life

Calculator So I migrated over the weekend to Windows 7 64 bit over the weekend… So far it is has been a pretty good experience, the install was fast and from a clean install. Since I was on Vista 32 bit (x86) then I had to format the drive and start fresh. No big deal, I have a Windows Home Server, so I just did a standard backup and also moved the important files over to the server.

30-40 minutes later I was finished… Got Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, SQL Express 2008 and even Live Essentials all on the x64 environment. Have to say that was the easiest install I have ever done in the last 20 years of building computers and install operating systems!

I have been getting used to Win7 and needed to do a simple bit of math, so I just pushed the calculator button on my keyboard (Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000)….. Then wow a new version of the Calculator (screen shot on the right). Nice looking, definitely must be WPF! Now where it gets nice is in all the new functions. Below is the screen shots….

Windows Home Server: The Reason to Own One

image A few months ago I bought a Windows Home Server for several reason; central storage of media and files, for a better backup system and most importantly the ability to “re-install” and entire drive image.

Well I got the call from my sister as expected that here computer had “crashed”. She has been letting my 17 year old nephew use her laptop, since he killed his a few months ago. I love Dave, but lets face it he’s17 and World of Warcraft/sensitivity of hard drives don’t mix well. I figured a virus or over exuberant game play would kill the hard drive at some point. So I did a backup to the WHS after the last “fix”.
