Happy Birthday Windows

windows-birthday-23 I was reading through my RSS feeds and on Mobility Site was an article about Microsoft Windows turning 23 today.

Yep, 23 years ago Microsoft release Windows 1.0… Wow now I feel old, back then I was playing with an Apple II and thinking my "dual floppy drive" made me awesome. I even had a 1200 baud modem!

I never touched Windows until version 3 and was using DOS.

Crap I aged, I was 15 then.

Jerry Yang Resigns as Yahoo! CEO

So Jerry "What a Complete Yahoo!" Yang has resigned as Yahoo!‘s CEO. This opens up the possibility that Microsoft might look at Yahoo! again for acquisition, which in my opinion would be a good deal for both companies.

Outside of the technology issues, which would be huge, Yahoo! and Microsoft combined would be great. I would position Yahoo! for the consumer/open source world and Microsoft for the business applications and semi-open source world. Azure and Linux with intermixing products. It would also help drive .NET into the Linux environment (MONO Project), which would be great!

Stupid, but Funny!

On Ars Technica there is a story about Steven Barnes, an IT Admin who broke a few laws. Apparently he was fired (or assaulted) and 6 months later decided to see if he old Admin login and password worked. They did and then he apparently got stuck on stupid.

What you don’t want to do is precisely what Steven Barnes actually did. Once he realized that he had full system access, the former manager turned the company’s email server into an open relay server, deleted the company’s Microsoft Exchange e-mail database, and futzed around with the OS installation one way or another to ensure the server would crash on boot.

The Future of Live Mesh

Live Mesh Devices

I was reading LiveSide.net this morning about the future of Live Mesh. It is pretty interesting that you will be able to connect not just PCs, Macs, Windows Mobile, but also a whole host of other devices.

Live Mesh will become part of the Live services, Windows 7 and Windows Home Server.

Live Mesh is a great innovation by Microsoft and a sign of things to come!

Check out the article on LiveSide.net.

Mars Lander (in) Terminal (Mode)

lander_digging I love NASA and have always dreamed of some how being involved with them. I have been lucky to deal with a few of the contractors and have even been to a couple R&D facilities. But the idea of being part of something on the scale of the "Moon Race", is just one of those idealistic dreams. My professional skills don’t match-up much with who NASA hires… But I can dream!

Well the Phoenix Lander is now terminal. The lander will die in a few weeks and NASA has put in in Terminal Mode. The lander will wake up, perform a few tests and then shut down daily. This will last for awhile and then it will be silence.
