Windows Home Server: The Reason to Own One

image A few months ago I bought a Windows Home Server for several reason; central storage of media and files, for a better backup system and most importantly the ability to “re-install” and entire drive image.

Well I got the call from my sister as expected that here computer had “crashed”. She has been letting my 17 year old nephew use her laptop, since he killed his a few months ago. I love Dave, but lets face it he’s17 and World of Warcraft/sensitivity of hard drives don’t mix well. I figured a virus or over exuberant game play would kill the hard drive at some point. So I did a backup to the WHS after the last “fix”.

So today my sister dropped the laptop off and I discovered the dead hard drive (no spin). I replaced the hard drive and popped in the PC Restore disc for the WHS. 1 hour late, the computer has been completely restored and I am just running Windows Update to get it updated… Then I will do another backup and she can have the computer back.

Last time it was 2 days of work re-installing everything. Today, 2 hours. Yep, that is worth the cost of admission. If you are the “IT person” for family and friends get a Windows Home Server for the (up too) 10 PCs you care about.
