The move to the new server is all done (mostly)
Well, I finally got moved over to the new server (VPS at KnownHost.com). I would have been done Sunday, but I toasted the data base and had to rebuild it. I have also moved the site from WordPress to WordPress MU. I still have to migrate the other sites over to this server, but I have until February to do so.
My plans had been to migrate to a Windows VPS or host this year, but I know Linux and since I am not learning ASP.NET it was just an extra level of effort I don’t have time for. Beyond that, I have a Windows Home Server and can run sites off it if I want to program on Windows (ASP.NET or PHP).
The key issues why I went to a VPS…
- I was using a shared account at 1and1.com and it was pushing the ram use limits of what they allow. 1and1.com is noted for shutting down sites that exceed their “unlimited” limits…
- 1and1.com overload the shared account servers.
- More control of system and dedicated resources.
- The ability to run WordPress MU so I can have a single background to maintain for the 7 sites that I run that use WordPress.
- Note on 1and1.com – If you want a family blog or a low use site and do not require much support they are just fine. Speed is ok if you are not looking for much. Their support sucks and I was disappointed at the responses I got (confusion and runaround = 6 emails to resolve a simple problem). The last incident in fall 2008, cemented the idea that I would leave them. The economy and college limited my ability to leave 1and1.com last spring.
- Why I choose KnownHost.com…
- Managed VPS… I didn’t want to have to deal with the basic box issues.
- Highly recommended at WebhostingTalk.com
- Excellent pre-sales responses = both in information and response speed
- 3 hours to get my VPS
- Rapid response on my initial setup issues (stuff I didn’t know). All on low/mid priorities (20 minutes).
- Very fast download speed (700KB/5.6Mb) which is just shy of my maximum download speed of 6Mb on my U-Verse DSL line. 1and1.com was 500KB/4.0Mb on a good day.
- 30 day money back guarantee and no long term contract.
I do not know if KnownHost.com will maintain this level of excellence, but so far I am very happy and will highly recommend them (why there is now an affiliate banner). My plan is to make a review at WebHostingTalk.com in the next couple of months and I will also place it here on my site.
