RIP: Webmaster

I was reading through the ASP.NET blogs to learn a little bit about Sharepoint. My employer uses it for an intranet portal and document management. The idea is good, but I have not been convinced of its "superiority" over anything else as the IT manager cites. From the outset my opinion of Sharepoint was one of "not impressed", but as I have learned a bit more I have come to realize it is an excellent base to build off of. It is my employers implementation that is not that impressive.

On Dan Lewis’s blog he states;

To me the term Webmaster died because of all the new technologies that have evolved over the last 10 years.

I absolutely agree that the webmaster died years ago, but not the idea that Sharepoint killed the webmaster. All Content Management Systems killed the webmaster. Mambo Server Joomla, Drupal, DotNetNuke, and even the lighter weight systems such as WordPress killed the webmaster. Once the Internet went to dynamic sites and was used for commerce, the gig was up. You were the administrator/developer of a major IT product or service.
